What is the Maximum RV Rental Size for California National & State Parks?
Posted on Feb 16, 2024
Before going RV camping in California, it is important to know what is the maximum RV rental size allowed for each state park.
Like the parks, Orange County RV rentals come in all shapes and sizes. Each RV or motorhome rental offers something different to its renter. There is almost as much variety in California’s RV rentals as there is in state and national parks in California. As the leading provider of RV rentals in Orange County, 1st Choice RV has a vehicle for everyone. When planning your California motorhome road trip, there are many things to consider. While it is easy to get caught up in destinations and parks, not many motorhome renters recognize that every national and state park has its own length restriction when it comes to Southern California motorhome rentals.
Below are 5 of the most popular Golden State state parks. Each state park has its own length restriction in place for every Orange County RV and California motorhome.
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
As the largest in California’s state park system, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is the perfect way to experience the desert’s quiet beauty while avoiding the crowds. The park itself makes up 1/5 of San Diego County, and the Vallecito Mountains bind the breathtaking desert bowl to the south and the Santa Rosa Mountains to the north. When it comes to RV length restrictions, all RV rentals must be under 35 feet long. All trailers must adhere to the same size restrictions.
Big Basin Redwoods State Park
Many guests on a Calabasas RV rentals road trip are interested in laying eyes on the state’s famous redwood trees. There are few better places to do so than in California’s oldest state park. Located just over twenty miles northwest of Santa Cruz, Big Basin has the largest continuous grove of redwoods south of San Francisco. Complete with spectacular waterfalls and abundant wildlife, this is the perfect park to visit in your rental motorhome – provided it is under 27 feet long. Pull behind trailers must be shorter than 24 feet.
Calaveras Big Trees State Park
If one park dedicated to big trees wasn’t enough, give Calaveras Big Trees State Park in the Sierra Nevada a try. This park was set aside to protect two groves of giant sequoia trees. It is the perfect place to get a little escape into California’s most impressive mountain range. If you happen to have rented a larger RV, Calaveras is also a good option. In this park, both trailers and motorhomes can be 30 feet long.
Morro Bay State Park
For those with larger Orange County RV rentals that want to experience the coast, check out Morro Bay State Park. This park in San Luis Obispo County is great for bird watching, fishing, sailing, and hiking. It sits right on the shores of some spectacular marine protected areas. RVs and trailers need to be shorter than 35 feet to enter.
Grover Hot Springs State Park
To add a little relaxation to your Calabasas-based RV rental road trip, head up to Grover Hot Springs State Park. Grover Hot Springs contains natural hot springs for you to soak and swim in. You can find this park nestled in the beautiful Eastern Sierra right on the border of the awe-inspiring Great Basin. Be careful though, visitors to this park need to make sure their trailers or motorhomes are both under 18 feet in length.
When it comes to planning an Orange County RV rentals road trip, it is easy to get caught up in destinations and dreams. However, many RV owners and renters forget to consider any length restrictions. They choose their desired destinations without considering the possible length restrictions in place. Whether you have a towable camper or standalone motorhome, be sure to do this added research before pulling into a campground that is too small for your vehicle. To save a little extra space, rent a motorhome without a tow vehicle.
